Ghana

Each year, usually in November, the school offers Sixth Form students a chance to experience a unique visit to the West African country of Ghana. This includes a large secondary school, with which Hazelwick have established a highly successful link.

Below you'll find a short video (Microsoft Windows Media Player required) highlighting key moments of our most recent trip, including making new friends, learning new skills, and of course experiencing a culture different to our own.

What does the trip involve?

Below are links to information about the places visited in Ghana, some written by students who went on the trip, in November 2008, and some photographs.

Is the Ghana experience for me?

Students thinking about going to Ghana will undoubtedly be asking themselves this vital question.

The Ghana Committee

We would like you to be closely involved in fund raising and developing the links with the Secondary School and villages. There will be weekly meetings with students to organise the School Link and Fund Raising Activities. These will be an integral part of the project and will not be optional. Ultimately, we hope that you will be contributing to this project as much as you are gaining from the many unique experiences which it has to offer.

On Friday 19th June 2009, the sixth form Ghana Committee held a sponsored bike ride in aid of the Surveyline fund. The money raised was £733.93 and this has been spent on plaster for the kindergarten walls, and furnishings. The new school building will officially be 'handed over' to the Ghanaian education authorities during the November 2009 visit. Another sponsored bike ride was held during October 2009, which raised over £150.00!

Aggrey Memorial School’s Visit to the UK

Every year, usually around June or July, a group of students and staff from Aggrey Memorial School in Cape Coast, Ghana (which is visited by Hazelwick as part of the annual Ghana trip) come to the UK. This year (June 2009), the group had the opportunity to go sightseeing, take part in school activities and lessons and experience day-to-day life in the UK by going shopping in Crawley and spending four nights in Hazelwick students’ homes.

Hazelwick sixth-formers accompanied the Aggrey students on two separate day trips to London and Brighton, seeing all the main sights and getting to know each other. In addition, the group stayed at a Youth Hostel in Arundel with a group of Hazelwick sixth formers and staff for two nights. This weekend included a visit to Amberley Museum, a walk around the town centre, lunch on Littlehampton beach, watching an evening light festival in Chichester, a joint performance of Ghanaian songs at a church’s Sunday service and free time spent singing, dancing to African drumming and playing games. The trip was thoroughly enjoyable for all involved.

Aggrey students also took part in a joint project with Hazelwick drama students throughout their stay, culminating in a performance at the Cultural Exchange Evening held on Tuesday 30th June 2009. The evening, organised by the Drama Department, was based on the theme of ‘Don’t Forget’ and included thought-provoking music, dance, drama and poetry, presented by students from both schools.
